TotalBoat Lust is a one-part marine spar varnish that allows rapid recoating and builds a deep amber finish with excellent UV protection. Ideal for interior and exterior brightwork, Lust produces a durable, high-gloss or low-sheen finish depending on application method.

Surface Preparation
Bare Wood
- Ensure wood is clean, dry, and free of contaminants.
- Ideal moisture content: 6–8% (below 10% acceptable).
- Sand with 220-grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain.
- Remove all sanding residue using a vacuum or tack cloth.
- Wipe surface with solvent and allow to dry completely.
Previously Varnished Surfaces
- Remove all poorly adhered coatings and strip to bare substrate if necessary.
- Wash surface with soap and water and rinse thoroughly.
- Wipe with solvent and allow to evaporate.
- Sand with 220–320 grit sandpaper until smooth.
- Remove all sanding residue and allow to dry.
Teak
- If surface is gray or weathered, clean using TotalBoat Teak Cleaner.
- Allow wood to dry completely before coating.
- Follow bare wood preparation steps.
Epoxy Surfaces
- Allow epoxy to cure for 5–7 days.
- Wash to remove amine blush.
- Sand with 220–320 grit sandpaper.
- Clean surface and allow to dry completely.
Previously Painted Surfaces
- Apply only to compatible coatings in good condition.
- Sand thoroughly and clean surface prior to application.
Application
- Stir thoroughly before use.
- Apply at approximately 3 mils wet film thickness.
- Minimum overcoat time:
- 1 hour @ 72°F
- 3 hours @ 60°F
- 6 hours @ 50°F
- Up to 5 coats may be applied per day.
- No sanding required between coats if recoated within 48 hours.
- Do not sand for at least 24 hours after final coat.
- If multiple coats are applied in one day, allow 48 hours before sanding.
- Sand lightly with 320 grit sandpaper between fully cured coats.
- Apply a minimum of 6–8 coats for optimal performance.
Finish System (Gloss vs Matte)
- Use High Gloss for all seal and build coats.
- Use Matte for final coats only.
- Gloss and Matte may be blended to achieve desired finish.
Seal Coat
- First coat may be thinned up to 100% to promote penetration.
- Alternatively, apply 2–3 coats of TotalBoat Wood Sealer prior to varnishing.
Application Conditions
- Ideal temperature: 60–85°F
- Do not apply below 45°F or above 105°F
- Avoid direct sunlight and high humidity conditions
Application Methods
Brushing/Rolling
- Thin 5–10% with TotalBoat Brushing Thinner 100 if needed.
- Use high-quality natural bristle brushes.
- Foam brushes may be used for seal coats.
- Use 1/8" foam or mohair rollers.
Spraying
- Thin 10–25% with TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101.
- Use minimum thinning required for proper atomization.
Maintenance
Clean with boat soap and water. Sand lightly with 320 grit sandpaper and apply 1–2 maintenance coats annually for exterior applications.
Warning
RAGS, STEEL WOOL, OR WASTE SOAKED WITH THIS PRODUCT MAY SPONTANEOUSLY CATCH FIRE IF DISCARDED IMPROPERLY.
