TotalBoat Wood Sealer fills and seals the grain of bare wood to create an ideal foundation for 1-part varnish finishes. It dries quickly, requires no sanding between coats, and is suitable for all wood types including oily hardwoods and plywood. For interior and exterior use.

Surface Preparation
Bare Wood
- Ensure wood is clean and free of contaminants.
- Ideal moisture content: 6–8% (below 10% acceptable).
- Sand with 220-grit in the direction of the grain.
- Remove dust by vacuum or tack cloth.
- Wipe with appropriate solvent and allow to dry.
Previously Varnished Surfaces
- Strip poorly adhered coatings to bare substrate.
- Wash with soap and water, rinse thoroughly.
- Wipe with solvent and allow to evaporate.
- Sand with 220–320 grit until smooth.
- Remove residue and allow to dry before application.
Teak
- Clean gray/weathered teak using TotalBoat Teak Cleaner.
- Allow to dry completely.
- Follow bare wood preparation steps.
Epoxy Surfaces
- Allow epoxy to cure 5–7 days.
- Wash to remove amine blush.
- Sand with 220–320 grit.
- Clean and allow to dry.
Application
- Stir thoroughly before use.
- Recoat when tack-free.
- No sanding required between coats if recoated within 48 hours.
- Apply 2–3 coats for best results.
- Avoid applying thicker than 3 mils wet film thickness.
Important Notes
- Bubbles may appear during first coat on bare wood; tip with brush to remove.
- Do not sand before 24 hours of drying.
- Allow 48 hours before sanding if multiple coats applied in one day.
- Do not use solvent wipes within 48 hours of application.
Application Conditions
- Ideal temperature: 60–85°F
- Do not apply below 45°F or above 105°F
- Avoid direct sunlight and high humidity
Application Methods
Brushing/Rolling
- No thinning typically required
- If needed, thin 5–10% with TotalBoat Brushing Thinner 100
- Use high-quality natural bristle brushes or foam brushes
- 1/8" foam or mohair rollers recommended
Spraying
- Thin 10–25% with TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101
- Use minimum thinner required
- Recommended equipment settings vary (airless, pressure pot, siphon cup, HVLP)
Yearly Maintenance
- Clean with boat soap and water
- Apply 1–2 maintenance coats for exterior use
- Sand lightly with 320-grit before recoating
Applying Other Products Over Wood Sealer
- Compatible with many varnishes and coatings
- Do not apply 2-component products
- Allow 48 hours cure before topcoating
- Sand with 220–320 grit before applying topcoat
