True color samples for these stains are very hard to provide, as they are subject to the wood tone underneath, the number of coats of stain applied, and the finish applied over the stain. Interstain comes as a paste, that, when thinned, can be applied very easily with a brush. The stain actually works to fill in the grain, adding color and providing a more even surface for a finish product to be applied to.
If other blended tones are desired, Interstain can be blended, but do not blend it with other brands of stain.
How do Interstain products line up against other stains? There is no real standard for stain colors, and it's important to understand there is no true conversion between brands. Some household stain brands are not all considered compatible with marine-grade varnish systems either, so always do as much background research to determine if products may be compatible or if they will produce the desired appearance.
It is strongly recommended to always try staining a small piece of the same material that is not part of the bigger project, then finish it using the desired products. You may find that you don’t like the finish tone, or it needs another coat of stain before finishing. It's far more costly to find out that you don’t like something after, than trying a small sample beforehand.
