Like any other varnish, TotalBoat Halcyon requires maintenance coats when used for exterior applications. The interval of time between coats may vary between instances, but for most applications, maintenance coats should be applied yearly. UV exposure, use or wear and tear, the color of the wood that it is underneath, as well as how many coats were applied up until that point will dictate how frequently maintenance coats are required.
To perform maintenance coats, clean the Halcyon surface completely, removing any oil, grease, wax, or other potential contaminants. Lightly scuff or sand the surface in the direction of the wood grain, just to a haze (Scotch-Brite® pads or 320-grit sandpaper is recommended). Reapply 2-3 coats, as directed, and allow sufficient time for a proper cure prior to use.
