SYMPTOMS |

SOLUTION
|
Elixir did not achieve full hide |
- Elixir was not applied at the recommended wet film thickness (WFT)
- Not enough coats were applied
|
- Elixir is designed to be applied slightly thicker than most other paints.
|
Did not cure |
- Did not wait long enough
- Applied under cooler conditions than product states
- Contamination present
- Applied too thick
- Relative humidity is too high for the water in the paint to evaporate
|
- Wait another 24 hours to see if the paint cures satisfactorily
- Remove the uncured paint if it did not cure. Follow the surface preparation instructions with more care and attention to detail. Reapply Elixir.
- Only use the solvents that are specified for use with Elixir for thinning or surface preparation. Using alcohol or any other solvents besides water as a solvent wipe on previously applied Elixir, within 48 hours of application, can soften Elixir or prevent it from curing properly. If this occurs, completely remove the Elixir that has not cured properly and start over.
- Only apply Elixir at the specified wet mil thickness, under the specified ambient conditions.
- Ensure that no solvents or residue are present before applying Elixir.
|
Peeled off of the substrate |
- Surface contamination/ poor surface preparation
- Not a compatible substrate
- Surface preparation solvents still present when the Elixir was applied
- Elixir applied too thick
|
- if a skin has formed on the surface but it is soft and squishy like there is wet paint underneath the skin, wait 24-48 hours for the paint to finish drying, or remove the coating and reapply at the specified wet mil thickness.
- Only apply Elixir to approved, compatible substrates. It will not form a satisfactory bond to non-compatible substrates.
- If the coating is applied to a compatible substrate and it peeled off cleanly, then finish removing all paint, and perform all surface preparation again, taking much more care and attention to detail.
- Freshly applied coatings that have not had 48 hours to fully cure may still have a weak bond strength. Ideally, wait 48-72 hours before putting Elixir paint under high loads or stresses.
|
Not the desired color |
- Elixir only comes in 10 different colors
|
- Elixir is designed to be blended for custom colors and color matching.
- Any Elixir colors can be blended at any percentage with any other Elixir paints. Do not attempt to tint or pigment Elixir with any other paints besides Elixir.
|
White was not white enough |
|
- To promote the best 'white' color, ensure that the product is mixed thoroughly, as the white pigments can settle.
- Squeeze all of the air out of the bag between uses to prevent the paint from oxidizing in the Pour Pak™.
|
Finish was not glossy enough |
- Elixir is not a high-gloss finish
|
- Once Elixir has fully cured for 48 hours, it can be lightly sanded and a clear coat, clear urethane or varnish (such as TotalBoat Halcyon) can be applied to improve the gloss value of the overall coating.
- If the Elixir is applied too thin, it will have a lower gloss value than if it was applied at the specified wet mil thickness.
|
Finish was too glossy |
|
- A simple way to reduce the gloss level for Elixir is to apply a thinner wet film thickness on the final coat.
- Thinning 5-10% with water while applying it in a thin coat may also help promote a lower gloss level.
- Ensure that enough coats have been applied to achieve the desired amount of hide and color before performing this on the final coat.
|
Elixir dried too quickly |
- Environmental conditions
- Applied too thin
|
- Avoid applying Elixir in direct sunlight, or when it is dry and hot.
- Thinning Elixir with a small amount of water (5-10%) may increase the working time, but thinning too much may reduce the overall gloss level, or promote more drips and sags.
- Elixir has decent working time and wet-edge properties when applied at the proper wet mil thickness; applying it thinner will allow it to dry quicker, losing its wet-edge properties.
|
Elixir did not dry fast enough |
- Ambient conditions not suitable for curing Elixir in the desired time
- Applied too thick
- Product thinned too much
- Contamination
|
- Only apply Elixir when the ambient temperature and relative humidity are within the specified parameters.
- Only apply Elixir at the specified wet film thickness. Applying it heavier will take the coating longer to cure.
- Wait longer to allow the paint to fully dry (cure), up to 24 hours. If the paint has not dried by then, try to establish the root cause, remove the paint, perform all surface preparation steps again, and reapply Elixir.
- Contamination such as waxes, oils, grease, or even solvents such as denatured or isopropyl alcohol, may prevent the cure of Elixir.
- Over-thinning the product can slow the cure rate, as the water must evaporate to allow the coating to cure and harden. Wait another few hours and reevaluate, if the Elixir was thinned.
