SYMPTOMS |
ISSUE |
SOLUTION |
Paint did not dry/cure |
- Product was applied too thick.
- Product was not applied under the required environmental conditions.
- The paint is still drying.
- An incompatible product was added to the paint before application.
- Surface contamination
|
- Wait longer for the paint to dry. The cure rate of air-dry paints and coatings can vary based upon the temperature and humidity.
- If the paint was applied too thick, it may skin over on the surface leaving wet paint underneath, which will feel gummy. The coating can be removed and you can start over, or simply wait for the paint to dry — this may take days or even weeks depending on how thickly it was applied.
- Only use the specified thinners or reducers at the directed percentage.
- If required, remove the coating, perform surface preparation more thoroughly, and reapply.
|
Alligatoring effect |
- The underlying paint or primer was not fully cured before being overcoated.
|
- Allow all paint to cure. Sand to remove any alligatored paint, and reapply TotalTread.
|
The paint did not stick to the substrate |
- Incompatible substrate
- Surface contamination on the substrate
|
- Only apply TotalTread to fiberglass, wood, or any of the specified TotalBoat primers.
- Remove all paint. Perform all surface preparation with more care and attention to detail.
- Do not cut corners or substitute any materials specified in the surface preparation instructions. Reapply TotalTread, as directed.
|
Fisheyes in the paint |
- Surface contamination on the substrate. The contaminant has repelled the wet TotalTread.
|
- Remove all paint. Perform all surface preparation with more care and attention to detail.
- Do not cut corners or substitute any materials specified in the surface preparation instructions. Reapply TotalTread, as directed.
|
Non-skid media was not evenly distributed |
- Continually stir the paint throughout the application process, the non-skid media can settle.
|
- Apply another coat, taking extra care to stir the paint during application.
|
Non-skid surface on the cured paint is too aggressive |
|
- Lightly scuff the surface with 400-grit or 500-grit sandpaper once the paint has cured for at least 48 hours. This will 'soften' the texture.
|
TotalTread is not 'shiny' enough |
|
- TotalTread comes as a low-sheen finish to help reduce slipperiness and glare when used on horizontal surfaces. Blending some TotalBoat Wet Edge paint into the final coat will bring up the gloss of the paint.
|
TotalTread does not come in the desired colors |
|
- Blending a small amount of TotalBoat Wet Edge paint (5-20%) with TotalTread can help to achieve a much wider range of colors, while still retaining the low-sheen, non-skid surface.
|
TotalTread is clogging the spray gun |
- Spray gun's filter may be catching the non-skid media.
- The nozzle's tip may not be wide enough for the non-skid media.
|
- Remove any internal filters in the gun. Normally, these filters would help to catch any clumps or other particles in a smooth paint job. They will quickly jam up with the non-skid media in TotalTread.
- Use an appropriately wide spray tip size that allows the non-skid media to come out. This may take some experimentation.
