Due to the many environmentally-focused rules and regulations, most boatyards and marinas restrict the use of conventional two-part teak cleaners, as they contain caustic chemicals and are toxic to users and the environment. However, boaters sometimes need a way to address weathered teak wood while their boats are in the water. One way to do that is to choose cleaning products that tout compliance with the EPA's National Clean Marina and Clean Boating guidelines, or carry the EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) label. While vinegar won't restore gray teak to the freshly sanded look, a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water can be used to remove mildew.
Teakdecking Systems offers a 'green' ECO line of one-part, concentrated, environmentally-friendly teak cleaners that contain no acid, no caustic sodas or phosphates, and are non-toxic to users. They're available in premixed liquid form, or concentrated powder that mixes easily with water. Importantly. they meet Florida Clean Marina Program standards, and are MARPOL compliant
