TotalBoat Silica Thickener
TotalBoat Silica Thickener is an extremely fine fumed silica additive used primarily with epoxy, vinyl ester, and polyester resin systems to create a smooth, thixotropic, non-sagging, high-strength mixture for structural bonding, filleting, and filling. It can be used alone or blended with other fillers to achieve desired working or cured properties. Silica Thickener imparts a milky white color to the liquid resin and cures with a smooth surface.
Key Features
- Thickening agent for unsaturated polyester resin, vinyl ester resin, or epoxy systems
- Adhesive thickener adds strength and abrasion resistance
- Increases sag resistance and body of liquid resin material
- Works as a stand-alone thickener or blended with other fillers
- Ideal for filling gaps or holes
- Helps prevent liquid resins from being absorbed into porous substrates
- Color: White
Compatible Resin Types
Unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy systems, solvent-based coatings, adhesives, and sealants
Personal Safety
Always use proper Personal Protective Equipment when using any TotalBoat product. Refer to the TotalBoat Silica Thickener Safety Data Sheet for more information.
Application
- Add Silica Thickener slowly and mix according to the resin type. Stir slowly to avoid aeration.
- Continue mixing until the desired viscosity or body is achieved and evenly dispersed.
- Consistency can range from a liquid-gel to a thick, peanut butter-like texture with excellent sag resistance.
- Large amounts of silica may be required to reach thicker consistencies; this is normal.
- Adding silica increases mass, shortens working time, and increases heat during curing.
- The silica itself is non-reactive and does not affect cure chemistry.
- To prolong working time, spread the thickened resin thinly in the mixing container to dissipate heat.
Epoxy Applications
- Mix resin and hardener before adding Silica Thickener.
- Add silica during the epoxy’s working time for proper incorporation.
Polyester or Vinyl Ester Applications
- Add Silica Thickener before catalyzing to allow unlimited time for viscosity adjustment.
- For gelcoat: can increase viscosity, but apply only at specified thickness. Not recommended for gap filling.
Other Uses
- Can be added to solvent-based coatings or adhesives/sealants to increase viscosity.
- Avoid adding excess silica and ensure complete blending to prevent clumping.
- Test before use, as silica may affect surface texture, sheen, or cure rate.
- May not be compatible with some two-component or water-based coatings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is TotalBoat Silica Thickener used for?
It is used to thicken epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester resins to create non-sagging, high-strength mixtures for bonding, filling, and structural applications.
Can it be used with epoxy systems?
Yes, it is commonly used with epoxy systems. Be sure to mix the resin and hardener before adding the silica.
How does it affect working time?
Adding silica increases the mass of the mixture, which can shorten working time and increase heat generation during curing.
Can it be used for gap filling?
Yes, it is excellent for filling gaps and holes when mixed to a thicker consistency.
Does it change the color of the resin?
Yes, it gives the resin a milky white appearance before curing.
