'BPA-free' is usually most relevant for projects that may ultimately come into contact with food, such as table tops, serving boards and other food-contact surfaces where the intention is for holding food (so perhaps not a cutting board).
BPA resins have been used to line water pipes, to line canned goods to prevent spoilage, and for many other uses for several years. There's been some concern as to whether bodily intake is harmful. The FDA says BPA is actually safe at typical exposure levels.
