There are a number of reasons that TotalBoat Gelcoat can cure to a duller finish than desired. However, under most circumstances, this can be fixed by wet standing and buffing.
- Gelcoat had wax, which will come to the surface as it cures, giving a waxy texture on the surface. Once cured, remove the wax and buff the surface until it has achieved the desired shine.
- Dew, fog, or other moisture was exposed to the gelcoat during the curing process. Remove any surface wax or air-dry additives that have come to the surface, wet sand and buff the surface, as needed, until it achieves a glossy finish.
- Significantly over-catalyzed gelcoat can appear dull, chalky, and almost appear 'dry'. This material may need to be removed, depending on the severity. Try to wet sand and buff the surface to see if it comes out to the desired gloss and smooth finish, taking extra care not to burn through the gelcoat.
- Other additives or thinners beyond the recommended level can lead to a dull finish. Attempt to wet sand and buff the surface to see if it brings out the desired glossy finish. If it does not, sand heavily, or remove the gelcoat and reapply, taking more care to follow proper gelcoat application methods.
