Oil-based stains can be applied before applying TotalBoat Lust or TotalBoat Gleam 2.0 varnishes, but it is extremely important to test for adhesion and compatibility before attempting to do so on the final project.
Some stains such as the Minwax® brand work great within their line, but have a tendency to reject other brands of varnish when they're applied over it. Interlux brand wood stains and Circa 1850 stains have yielded good results for customers, but TotalBoat does not recommend any specific wood stains for use with Lust and Gleam 2.0 varnishes.
Always follow all directions for the stain product prior to applying TotalBoat Lust or Gleam 2.0 varnish.

I wish you could commit to which stain products work and which ones don't with your products. Instead, this leaves a lot of uncertainty and your customer liable for anything that goes wrong.
How does one do a serious test for adhesion and compatibility, without years of watching and observing?
